It’s been awhile since I’ve blogged about anything! The last month has kind of been a whirlwind..lot’s going on.. the good, bad and the ugly.
December is upon us..which means busyness takes on a whole new level. Christmas shopping, decorating, baking, and working. I wish so much that I was the person who did all her shopping in November, but, I’m not. Last year I was done early December but this year I’ve barely started and literally can’t even think of when I’ll find the time. I know I will because I have to..but it’s starting to reach the scary point!!
Anyway…on to other things.
Collagen: I started taking this daily in August of this year. I was skeptical but thought I’d give it a try. I add it to my shakes daily. It doesn’t have a taste at all so occasionally I will add it to my coffee. It’s not terribly expensive either which is nice.
What is Collagen?
Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body. It is a building block that :
- promotes skin elasticity
- holds together your bones and muscles
- protects your organs
- provides structure to joints and tendons
While your body produces collagen, it slows down with age. Unhealthy eating, smoking, sun exposure all affect production as well. So taking the supplement “may” help with: joint pain, reversing signs of aging, help to build muscle and burn fat, reduce cellulite, digestive health, and the health of your hair. “MAY” help. Put the word MAY in front of all those benefits.
So what have I noticed? Well..I think it’s helped with a few things. My digestion is better. I’ve always had a very sensitive system..my gut is the first thing that reacts to stress of any kind. And there has been handfuls of that over the last 5 years. I’d say my system has been more calm and “normal” for the last 3 for sure. Can I attribute it completely to collagen? Not at all. I’ve also become better at managing stress while being very aware of foods that I eat that trigger problems. BUT collagen “may” have helped too.
I would say that my nails are definitely longer and stronger than normal. I have to keep them pretty short for work regardless, but less ridges, less splitting, and they grow really fast.
My hair was a big one for me. Listen, 2017/2018 were not good years for my hair. Damaged by products, one horrible stylist ( toning my hair 5 times trying to get an accidental red colour out) and no matter how much Monat I used it wasn’t getting better. Is it the collagen? Well..again..maybe? I also found a stylist that knew what he was doing. I’m still using the same products so maybe they are starting to help too? Maybe it’s the collagen? Maybe a good combination of all those things. But my hair feels and looks better than it has in ages and it’s just getting better all the time. I’ll score that one for collagen.
Skin: I haven’t magically lost all my wrinkles. Enough said.
All in all..I believe that it’s entirely likely that collagen is helping me on some level. It’s only been just over 3 months so I’ll keep taking it and see how I feel about it in another 3. I also fully believe that if my mind believes it’s helping, then it’s helping. Hard to know if it’s placebo or fact without a blind test. The price doesn’t factor in since a tub is only around $40 and lasts for a good month. There is no flavour so that’s also not a factor.
