If you are on instagram, you’ve likely read this word 1937362 times. It just has to be one of the most overused words on social media. A few years ago I had to google what DIFYM meant. In case you haven’t done that yet, it means, “Does it fit your macros”. Oy.
So for us newbies, here’s what a macro is. It’s a macronutrient. As opposed to a micronutrient. There are 3 types of macronutrients:
FATS, CARBOHYDRATES, PROTEINS.
That’s it. Nothing magical or mystical or confusing..although I know it can easily feel that way. Don’t ever be ashamed of not being able to navigate the world of food, diets, and nutrition. It can be complicated, intimidating, scary, and just too much. And sometimes even reaching out through google can make it worse.
Our bodies use these macronutrients for energy, hormone production, hormone balancing, repair and rebuilding of tissues, our immune health, our brains and central nervous system, cardiovascular function, just to name a few.
So, pretty freaking important. But it doesn’t have to be confusing.
When we eat MOSTLY whole foods, from a variety of sources, we get our macros and our micros. That’s the beauty of whole foods.
For the vast majority of us, we don’t need to be counting anything. We don’t eat nutrients, we eat food. If you eat a variety of meals consisting of vegetables, protein, and carbohydrates, you are likely getting what you need. As far as portions go? That can be as easy as using your hand. For MOST of us ladies (generals apply here, if you want specifics, sign up for my coaching program!) 1 palm size portion of protein, 1 cupped hand of carbs, 1 fist size of veggies, 1 thumb of protein is a really easy way to start.
There is a ton of information at our finger tips..sometimes too much. Getting caught up in all the food drama out there can be overwhelming. Which is the best diet? What does SHE eat to look like that? Keto? Paleo? OMG. SO. OVERWHELMING.
Getting a nutrition coach can help you walk through this chaos and break it down so it’s not overwhelming. You won’t be alone. You’ll have accountability. You’ll have someone to help you figure out what works for you and YOUR body.
